What are the reasons for sperm freezing?

The fertilityworld suggests that any male between 18 to 35 years may freeze their sperm (preserve) as the sperm tends to be healthiest at this stage of life because you never know what kind of environmental exposures you’ll come across or what health conditions could occur. Some of the medical conditions and lifestyles that made you preserve your sperm:

  • For IVF or IVF-ICSI cycle treatment,
  • If you wish to donate your sperm to other people,
  • Men who are undergoing surgeries like orchiectomy (removal of the testicles),
  • Have azoospermia or a complete absence of sperm.
  • Men with Cancer– any type of cancer has the potential to affect sperm production or quality,
  • You’re advancing in age,
  • You have a low sperm count or decorating sperm,
  • Pre-vasectomy patients
  • Transgender patients
  • You have high-risk occupations,
  • You are living far from home due to career,
  • You work at the hazardous sites- chemical exposure,
  • You saw foamy urine in the morning
  • You’re about to undergo cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiation),
  • You’re about to undergo testosterone replacement therapy.

What is Semen freezing or Sperm freezing?

Sperm banking or sperm freezing or sperm cryopreservation is the process of collecting, freezing, and storing the sperm in the fertility laboratory for 10 years up to 50 years that can impregnate your female partner.

The purpose of sperm freezing is for use in the future for procedures such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatments, and surrogacy journey. Another purpose of sperm freezing is for donating to other infertile couples or individuals, including same-sex female partners.

What is semen?

Semen is a male reproductive substance (fluid) composed of water, plasma, and mucus. The sperm consists inside the semen. Semen functions as a lubricant for carrying the sperm or the spermatozoa and fructose and other enzymes that help the sperm to survive to facilitate successful fertilization. Semen is grayish-white due to being rich in protein and is secreted by the gonads of male animals.

What are the legalities for sperm freezing?

The fertilityworld believes that everyone has legal rights in their possessions. Therefore, we provide an agreement for you to sign on your sperm freezing in our control, you’ll sign legal paperwork that will determine:

  • How long you may freeze your samples,
  • How you or your partner can use or discard the freezing sample, including in the event of your death.
  • If you wish to allow a legally authorized representative (like your spouse) to use or terminate it when you die, unfortunately.
  • The agreement is signed between the involved parties under the legal notary.

How do we collect sperm and prepare for freezing?

Men are asked to abstain from sexual activity about a few days before the collection to allow for the best possible healthy specimen. Next, a man undergoes an infectious disease screening/examination, usually a simple blood test by our experts making sure there are no sexually transmitted diseases (STD).

Sperm is typically collected through a conventional method that is masturbation. In case the sperm don’t ejaculate or no sperm in sufficient amounts for freezing via masturbation, a surgical retrieval method that is removing the sperm directly from the testicle is another option such as TESE/TESA/PESA/MESA is applied. This might be the case for those who have already had a vasectomy or undergone cancer treatment, have very low sperm count, or have no sperm in the semen need surgery to extract the sperm.

Sperm is either collected from your comfort home or in a fertilityworld fertility clinic or our sperm bank, following an approval method by our experts that doesn’t harm the sample quality.

How do we analyze the collected sperm?

Once the semen reaches our fertility laboratory, fertilityworld’s best andrologists i.e. are specialists in sperm and male fertility, analyze the sperm and prepare it for storage. Andrologists separate the sperm from the seminal fluid or testicular tissue and examine a small portion of the sample under a microscope. They made sure there is healthy, good quality, enough quantity, normal shape, and smooth mobility within each specimen.

How does the fertilityworld freeze the sperm?

After sample approval by the andrologist, the samples are separated into different vials for freezing. Our laboratory technicians use specialized cryoprotectant “anti-freezer” agents that help preserve and protect sperm cells. The frozen sperm is then stored in the laboratory under liquid nitrogen under -196 degrees. You can use this frozen sperm when you feel that it’s time for you to start your family via Intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments.

The frozen sperm is thawed, washed, and tested for mobility before use in IUI or IVF. Our Doctors then study the wife’s ovulation cycle to decide when to inject the sperm. At an appropriate time, the sperm vial is brought out, kept at room temperature, processed, and then injected. We conduct tests to check if the woman is pregnant.

The cost of Semen freezing in the fertilityworld

The cost of sperm freezing varies based on different fertility centers, their locations, and the standards of the center. Sometimes, the cost of sperm freezing is covered by insurance if you’re applying it for a valid medical reason.

The fertilityworld charges a very pocket-friendly cost of sperm freezing at just Rs.1,200 per month. The cost of sperm freezing is always flexible and transparent, there is no hidden cost. If surgical extraction methods are used then you have to procure the method cost such as TESE/TESA/PESA/MESA up to Rs.1lakhs.

The cost also covers the sperm freezing process from:

  • Conventional Sperm Collection,
  • Sperm Analysis,
  • Storage cost,
  • Freezing cost.

What is the confidence level of sperm freezing?

Sperm freezing is 100% safe. Treatment with frozen sperm is just as successful as treatment using fresh sperm as it produces a healthy child like the fresh sperm used in IUI or IVF treatments.

However, not all the sperm will survive the freezing and thawing process but it will not impact reproduction, because a single sperm alone fertilizes the egg from among the 15 to 200 million sperm present in a semen/mL.

Further, the sperm does not decline its effectiveness with freezing or thawing and it has the same fertilization capacity as fresh sperm. There is no difference in fertilization between frozen and fresh sperm.

What are the success rates of IUI or IVF with frozen sperms?

The success rate is more than 70% in the fertilityworld, which is far more satisfactory than other centers. Also, we provide the frozen methods at the lowest cost from Rs.1,000/month, and IUI or IVF at a minimal cost. But it is yet to be socially accepted and couples prefer to keep it a secret.

Stories about sperm freezing…..

How did a couple get pregnant via semen freezing?

A 35-year-old Maya Sharma and her husband have been living apart since he was posted to Dubai 5 years ago. They didn’t have a convenient time to start their family. Therefore, they utilized a sperm freezing platform to secure their family in the future. Last year, Maya’s husband got his sperm frozen at a private hospital in Kolkata that was used to impregnate Maya. Last week, Maya delivered a healthy baby boy completing their family dreams.

Anirban Gupta and Arati had married while they were still in their early 20s. Both of them left for the US to pursue their higher studies and their parenthood dreams were deferred indefinitely. Based upon the suggestion of the fertility specialist, Anirban Gupta got his sperm stored in a sperm bank for preservation until they came back. Unfortunately, 2 years back, Anirban encountered an accident that left him paralyzed. But even after the accident he is a proud father, he is so thankful to the sperm bank for preserving his sperm.

More and more couples from India and International are banking on sperm-freezing technology in the fertilityworld securing their parenthood, despite their ambitious career or vice versa. Last 3 years, the fertilityworld has induced about 100s of healthy births in IUI with frozen sperms. 500s induced healthy births in IVF treatments via Frozen sperms, we are happy to be part of their amazing parenthood journeys. Every day, inquiries and registrations are pouring in and there is a long queue to get sperm stored but we do our best not to refuse anyone’s request and registrations.

With the advancement in this generation’s minds, the possibility of medical complications cropping up at a later stage, they are not willing to leave it to chance.
